Crossings: The Mediterranean

Central Mediterranean — 2023

Photographs taken during rescue operations in the central Mediterranean, documenting the experience of migrants and refugees crossing from North Africa to Europe.

The Mediterranean is many things: a tourist destination, a trade route, a geological boundary. For thousands of people each year, it is the most dangerous border crossing in the world.

These photographs were taken during rescue operations — the narrow window between distress and safety. They show the vulnerability, the courage, and the ordinary humanity of people in extraordinary circumstances.

I do not publish these images lightly. Each one was taken with the knowledge and, where possible, the consent of the people in the frame. They chose to be seen. The least we can do is look.
